Mercedes to quit DTM for new Formula E entry

Mercedes have announced that they will leave the Deutsche Tourenwagen Masters (DTM) series at the end of the 2018 season. The team have instead chosen to focus on a new entry for the sixth season of Formula E in 2019/20.

The Stuttgart-based car manufacturer had previously expressed interest in the series last October and had reserved an entry prior to the first race of the season last year. However, Mercedes extended the option for a further year and have committed to race in Formula E for Season 6.

Mercedes’ departure from the DTM means that the team will not feature in the series  for the first time since the start of the re-branded series in 2000. Mercedes will join two other German manufacturers by the time it joins Formula E with Audi and BMW already confirmed to join the open-wheel series in Season 4 and 5 respectively.
